I thought it might be fun, within the next few posts, to share some of my exploits over a six year period with regard to riding in the annual ISDE.

It all started with a casual remark to a friend of mine who was a reporter for an off-road motorcycle paper, I said that I had given some scant consideration to riding in an ISDE before I was to old, (lol) this was in '84 when I was already 36 years of age. The upshot of this was a brief mention in the following weeks paper anouncing my intention to compete in this years event which was to be held in Holland. That should teach me to keep my thoughts to my self.

Anyway, I was now hung by the tongue, so preparations were made to go at the end of the year, usually September or October, the only challenge that I could see, was the fact that the ISDE was 6 days and the most I had ever raced was 2 days, hmm. All I could do was to keep on doing the National Championship rounds and the local 1 day events and hope that my natural fitness would see me through.

The big day finally arrived. We loaded the van with 2 bikes, kit-bags, spares ( I'd managed to get some support from the importer on a sale or return basis ) and 4 blokes and of we went. We caught the ferry boat to France, then made our way up through Belgium and on to Holland and by mid morning the next day we finally found our hotel. After resting up for a while, we made our way to Assen in the north of the country to register our entry and get the bikes scrutineered. This was a far cry from what I had been used to, for example, I had never had a medical check before an event before and there was a lot more administration involved than at home, but with a little help from some of the old guard we got through it and started to relax and enjoy the process, I mean, after all, there were riders from all over the world competing. There were even riders I had only ever seen in magazines and here I was, little ol' me, rubbing shoulders with some of the worlds off-road bikings finest....

On the Sunday before the actual race, there was a lot of speech making, parading around and razamataz which we subsequencly learned over the following years was all part of the show. In the afternoon we all took off to find some of the motocross special tests just to get a feel of what was to come.

Monday morning arrived with humungus amounts of trepidation. What had I let myself in for? too late now, there I was sat on my 500cc Husqvarna 4T along with 2 other guys, who looked just as nervous , waiting for the starter to give us the nod. This he duly did, and we were off. It's a strange thing that once your on your way, all the nerves and butterflies disappear and you just get on with the job in hand.

On the whole, it was a pretty uneventful day, I continued to lose time check after check due to the fact that Holland is a low lying country and is constructed of sand and more sand and more sand and...... get the picture? For those of you who have never raced on this type of terrain, ( like I hadn't ) It has got to be one of the most difficult surfaces to race on, it requires a different set of skills and if you don't have them, you end up at the end of the day completely knackered having wrestled with a machine that wants to go where it wants. To cut the story short, by Wednesday night I was so tired it was an effort to get my racing gear off , wash and have some food, and there was still 3 more days to go, Hell !!!

Thursday morning. Not feeling too bad, I get into conversation with a Swedish guy and he asked me if I am enjoying the event? Now, "enjoying it" is not a phrase that immediately sprang to mind, however, I explain my difficulties with the sand and he offers me some advice, he said " Forgive me but you ride very stiff and upright and seem to be fighting with your bike and that is why you are so tired, what you must do is to ride in a taller gear with lots of power from the engine and just relax in the saddle and to some extent let the bike weave about, all you have to do is steer it, simple....The starting Marshall signals our departure and I give the husky a big hand-full and took off with the back end weaving all over the place but this time I follow the advice and bit by bit begin to relax, and, what do you know? I'm in control and riding faster than I had been all week, wow, this is more like it, I'm still losing time, but nothing like before and I'm now actually racing and really starting to enjoy myself, if only I had talked to the Swedish guy sooner....

Friday, I am now really looking forward to the days racing. I've slept well had a good breakfast, arrived at the start, changed into my riding gear and got the bike out of the parc ferme and got under way. What could go wrong? only another day after today and I would be on my way home with a finishers medal. I started to really get the hang of the sandy conditions and was whizzing from checkpoint to checkpoint with very little loss of time, then on the going before the penultimate check, I found myself racing neck to neck with another English rider and we were really going for it, when all of a sudden my engine stopped and down I went, taking out 2 or 3 small saplings into the bargain. I jumped up and tried to restart the motor but it seemed to be locked so I pushed it along the trail towards a road section still trying to figure out what might be wrong. When I got to the road, I started to push it along towards the next checkpoint where I knew there to be some of our crew members. One of the Dutch riders stopped and asked what the problem was, I replied that I wasn't sure, but If I could just get it down the road to the crew, I might be able to fix it, with that , he indicated that I should sit on the bike and he would come to the left and back of me and push me with his foot on the rear end of my bike whilst accelerating along the road, highly illegal of coarse, but very effective. As we got close he bade me good luck and got on his way. What agentleman, eh? I found the Dutch to be a cracking bunch of people, always very helpfull.

With a little bit of obscure outside assistance, I got the bike to the checkpoint and proceeded to try and fix it. First thing, off with the clutch cover, I expect that something has just got jammed or something, but no, after inspection, everything in there was just fine.It was only then that it finally dawned on me that this bike was going nowhere, in fact it was terminal. What happened was that the big-end had given out actually splitting the conrod resulting in the piston coming down and whacking the flywheel thus belling out the skirt. I just stood there in total disbelief, feeling strangly emotional, the crew sensed this and gave me space to compose myself.

It's difficult to describe the emotions at a time like that, I've never been one to cry over things, even serious things, but at that very moment I could have burst into tears, all that effort, all that huge learning curve, the let-down, too much adrenalin.

BUT, did I enjoy the experience? Well, with the benefit of hindsight, of course I did, it was a huge adventure a massive learning curve and I came out of it a stronger, fitter rider with a strong desire to settle unfinished business and that would come the following year in Spain.........

My ’89 Enduro Bike

My 1989 ISDE Husky.

It was a modified 510 MX model with a 5 speed gearbox, I preferred this to the TE model with it's 6 speed box on account of the fact that the wider gear wheels were more robust.

My bike sported a 2 into I header pipe that fitted into a bespoke, longer, banana shaped silencer which helped to keep the girth of the bike narrower ( good for blokes with shorter legs like me ).

Another mod was the manufacture and fitting of a water pump that was driven off the camshaft as opposed to the crank, this was subsequently fitted as standard on the 1990 model by the factory, I managed to install all of the standard parts, impeller, shaft, bearings, cover etc.

I also fitted the shorter 2 stroke radiators thus keeping all things vulnerable up out of the way, any worries about overheating were dispelled. I ran this bike for over a year and never had it boil over even in really boggy slow going.

This beauty also had modified QD wheel spindles, one spanner had both wheels out, tyres changed and wheels back in place in about 6 minutes ( who's a big 'ed then? )

I really loved this bike, can't think why I sold it !!!!!

My 1st Trials Bike (part 2)

In the last instalment, my home grown trials bike was converted from a Greeves roadster with a 225cc 2-stroke villiers engine and Ariel telescopic forks.
The next major change to the bike came about because I aquired a 250cc BSA C15t 4-stroke engine with a broken gearbox, but with insufficient funds for the repair I managed to find a local bike dealer who was prepared to supply me with the replacement parts for the repair, in exchange for the 2-stroke engine, (who said the days of barter were over.)
The next job was to shoe-horn the engine into the Greeves frame whilst keeping the gearbox sprocket in line with the rear wheel sprocket. This was achieved with more hack-sawing and grinding of the ever diminishing engine plates, the lower engine cradle now acted as an integral bash plate to protect the sump. The interesting thing was the fact that in spite of the taller 4-stroke engine, I managed to maintain, if not, slightly improve the ground clearance. There was an airbox / battery box in the centre of the frame which also doubled as a structural member of the frame, so this was done away with and a bespoke oil tank was fabricated to take it's place. There were other things to make, like an exhaust system, an air filter, a battery holder which was mounted behind a plate sandwiched between the fork legs, underneath the top yoke, and so on.
If I had my own welding gear, all of this would have been so much easier to do, however, the truth of the matter was that all of the mods required had to be mocked up and prefabricated before I could get to a friend of mine who had the welding equipment.
It was the little things that took the time, like cutting out fashioning a rear brake lever from a piece of dural plate to make a rear brake lever and connecting this to the hub via a cable
This little beauty ran really well and was trialed for 3-4 years and was quite competetive in a world that was now being dominated by the new wave of Spanish marques.
After a time, I too was won over by the much lighter more powerful 2-stroke machines that were to drive the 4-stroke powered bikes into obscurity. The interesting thing is that now 4-stroke bikes are coming back to rule the roost.
When I think back on this project, I seem to recall that apart from a small selection of spanners, all I had for the fabrication was a hacksaw, a couple of files, one flat and one round, a DIY type electric drill with a few drill bits.
It's surprising what you can achieve with a bit of vision, a few tools and a low budget.

Now the job would be so much easier when you have the right tool for the job.

My 1st Trials Bike (part 1)

My first trials bike was born circa 1963, (see photo above, and yes this is the author, a long time ago). Although the manufacturer had never intended this particular model to become a trials motorcycle. It was in fact, a 250 cc Greeves, powered by a twin cylinder Villiers 2T engine that was fairly quick in it's day, although it had to be coaxed back into life on a monotonous basis because the wretched thing would stop working for a past time.

The Greeves Motorcycle Company was a small engineering firm that was based in Thundersley, Essex in the UK and was run by a couple of guys by the names of Bert Greeves and Derry Preston-Cobb. The company manufactured road bikes (my model), and a range of motocross and trials bikes, both of which had enjoyed a fair degree of success back in the 1960s . Anyway, back to the story......

The reason for thinking that my bike could be the doner for a trials bike was born out from the fact that all of the models built at Thundersley employed an aluminium casting instead of the usual tubular steel downtube that usualy formed the front of the frame that houses the headstock at the top, and engine mounts at the bottom. OK good enough for me. First job, out with the hacksaw and off with any bit of metal that was superfluous to the cause, (very soon there seemed to be a bigger pile of scrap than frame now), what next, ah, lights! this was way back in 1966 when a trials bike didn't require lights to be fitted as long as it was only used during the day, before the street lights came on, duuuh, so off with the lights and any bit of wire that wasn't being used for something important like a horn or something, oh, horn! don' t need that, off it comes, a silencer system that probably weighed 50% of the total bike weight on it's own and so on. Right, so what have we ended up with. A much lighter twin cylinder machine with repositioned foot-pegs and leading link forks, you know the type, they had a lump of rubber in torsion controlled by a couple of small dampers and when you applied the front brake the front end would rise up as opposed to dipping like a conventional fork, it still had it's original dual seat with aluminium mudgaurds and a couple of flexy pipes for the exhaust. SO, the big day, off to my local piece of scrub land down by the stream to put it through it's paces. "So how was it" I hear you cry? Crap, was the reply!!!!

What I needed here was a bit of a re-think. Clearly the engine had to go along with the front forks and I still needed to loose a couple more pounds in weight. I decided to remove two large slabs of steel from the humungus engine plates that ran beneath the engine from the "downtube" to the middle section of the frame, when all said and done, these were only really there to house the original footrests and centre-stand as the engine itself was a stressed part of the construction. The real plus point was that I actualy gained about 2" extra ground clearance. Another huge weight saver was the purchase of a genuine Greeves Challenger motocross fibreglass tank in favour of the all-steel road version that was also much wider. At this point, a club-mate said he had a Villiers 225 cc engine that came with a carb and a modified motocross exhaust system that would bolt right into the frame as the bolt hole centres were identical to the twin engine, we did some sort of a deal with PX and cash and off I went to bolt in my new motor. Next, the forks. Not far from home was a motorcycle breaker who sold me a pair of telescopic forks that started life bolted on to a 500 cc Ariel road bike of 1940/50 vintage he then said " If you need head-stock bearings to marry these forks to your frame you will need to check out some boxes. In this box we have different cups, in this box different cones and in these boxes different size ball-bearings, match them up and you can have the lot in with the price of the forks" lol. Thanks. I also bought a 19" half width hubed wheel and rushed off home to bolt it all together. The next thing to buy was a single trials seat which you could get, you know the sort of thing, one size fits all.

At this point, believe it or not, my trusty steed actually started to look a bit like the trials bikes the other guys were riding.

I rode quite a few events on this modified beauty and found that it wasn't a bad ride, by no means perfect, but ok, I mean, there were some blokes riding stuff that were bought, at some point in the past, as pukka trials machines that didn't seem to go nearly as well as my hybrid, or was it that I looked after mine a little better?

Finished? NO, the metamorphosis was not yet complete. See what happens to the old Greeves in the next installment.......

Trials Riding

Observed trials come in two forms, traditionally an outside sport where the rider is confronted with a series of natural obstacles or sections that he/she must ride over without stopping or touching the ground with their feet. Penalties are awarded thus:- Stopping = 5 marks lost, touching the ground twice or more with either foot = 3 marks lost, one dab of either foot = will cost you 1 mark but if you "clean the section" you won't incur a penalty.

Obviously, the rider with the least penalty points is the winner. Should there be a tie-break situation, then the rider with the fewer "5s" will take the honors.

The other form of trial is held in an indoor areana where the rider must overcome man made obstacles. in recent years the sections have got tougher and more imaginative on the part of the course builder, the rider is often confronted with obstacles that would seem impossible to tackle, but it is a credit to today's young band of athletes who seem to defy gravity and balance, dance, hop and pirouette with their machines. The scoring is the same apart from the point of balancing the machine statically with both feet up whilst deciding on what line to take = 0 marks lost.

Timed trials is a combination between observed trials sections and motocross. The object of the sport is to thrash around a closed circuit for an hour, but taking on a number of observed sections that are situated around differant parts of the course ,here trials marking is applied. The winner is the rider that has completed the most laps with the fewest marks dropped on observation in the sections.

Back in the day, motocross used to be called scrambling ( showing my age now ) so for the sake of this post we will use the modern name.

Motocross takes on two forms. The first, traditionally held outdoors is on a closed circuit of about 1-3 kilometres in length over rough ground. Riders are invited to ride over a series of obstacles ie. deep ruts, uphill, downhill, left and right corners, undulating straights and so on.

A motocross meeting can have different classes to accomodate riders of all abilities and skill levels and usually comprises of one practice session, so as to familiarize your self with the terrain, and then 2-3 races per class during the day.

The simple object of the meeting is to line up with about 30-40 other riders and go hell for leather when the gate drops and be first over the finish line after a predetermined time. Points are awarded to riders based on their finishing position and then totaled up after all the races to give an overall total for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on. An interesting point being, lets say arider who has 3 second places, and another rider, say, 2 wins and a forth place, the first rider could be the overall winner.

The other form of motocross is indoor arena supercross which condences the course into a stadium so the jumps and whoops come to the rider a whole lot quicker but the end result is the same as the outdoor veriety. The good thing about supercross is from the standpoint that the public can watch ALL of the course whereas outdoors spectators can only see parts of the track.

In recent years a new type of race has emerged, It's called a Beach Race. The rules are the same as the Hare "n" Hounds event ( see enduro) but are held at the seaside. Huge mechanical diggers are brought in to heap up the sand ino steep dunes whilst leaving a large hole in it's wake, the best bit after the rigours of the holes, dunes and ziggy-zaggy bits is the blast back down the beach at 100 mph to start all over again. The winner, the rider that does the most laps in the alloted time.

Is there a difference between motocross boots and enduro/trail boots?
The short answer is, not really. I will explain, for sports that are generally quite fast, like enduro or motocross, you need a boot that has a smooth sole/heal moulding so that when cornering with your foot stuck out sliding along the ground for stability, the last thing you need is a boot with a tread pattern that will want to grip terra firma with the result that you and the bike is going forward at a pace and your booted foot is trying to grip the trail. I guess you can figure out the results yourself. lol.

On the other hand, a boot for trials riding with a "commando" type sole pattern would be usefull with those long dabs or bouts of footing.

Having the right gear for the job in-hand will always pay dividends. Go swift, Go safe, Have fun.

Dual purpose motorcycle question ???
I'm thinking on getting a dirt bike and have a few questions. I wanted a motocross bike, but with the maintenance they require and due to the fact that I'm not going to be racing, I have changed my mind. I'm thinking of a dual purpose bike that I can ride on the street or trail. I currently own a 1999 Kawasaki KLR 650, and my questions are :

1. Do these bikes need to be rebuilt as much as the motocross bikes?

2. Which bike is best offroad?

3. Can you put alot of mileage on these bikes before a tear down?

4. Can you carry a passenger on any of them. This is my least important question

If you own one give me some insight on the model and brand you ride.

1. no, I've seen these bikes with 100K miles on them w/o a major rebuild. (my KLR only has 25K)

2. depends on where you want to go. I've ridden mine on single track trails in the mountains, through creeks, etc.. It's heavier than a normal dirt bike so crossing over fallen trees and stuff can be a bit of a challenge, but you can go just about anywhere if you're really determined and skilled enough for it.

4. yeah mine has passenger pegs, never carried one though.

Quad bikes on the roads in the UK?
I've seen a lot of people riding quad bikes on main roads round my area, is this now legal?

if so how old do u have to be & do u have to have a licene?

They're only legal if properly licenced, taxed, and insured. There are many "road-legal" quads out there being used by legitimate users, eg farmers or forestry workers. Some are simply used for pleasure use along with trikes and Harleys.
I suspect that what you are seeing are basically toys that are being used illegally by kids and are just causing hassle and annoyance.
Unsure about age limits....best check it out with DVLA at Swansea.
